February is chock-full of excitement and celebration for kids! It’s a month that may be short in days but incredibly rich in festive events. We kick off with the predictions of Groundhog’s Day, dive into the celebrations of Chinese New Year, mark a milestone with the 100 Days of School, and cap it all off with the sweetness of February 14th and Valentine’s Day. For a month that’s short on days, February knows how to pack in the fun.

Make Your Own Valentine Heart Pocket
Every year, we must make something to hold our Valentine’s cards and treats from each other. My go-to favorite is the heart pocket! In the post below, you get step-by-step instructions to make these heart pockets in your classroom. They’re so easy to make and use.
Use various construction paper colors, materials, and supplies to make each unique! You’ll find that you add new materials to the mix each year, making it super exciting.
We hang them with a bulletin board to be open at the top. My students can then add their Valentines throughout the week. We usually have a party on Friday when the kids get to open and read all their Valentine’s. I love seeing the smiles and hearing all the “Thank YOUs!”
Utilize a Poem of the Week for February
Of course, a poem of the week is about Valentine’s Day! We read and practiced the poem all week and completed language arts activities to go along with the poem.
Assign an Activity Book for Fun Academic Practice
My students love having some “FUN” with learning during these special events. I put together these Valentine’s Day activity books from the Valentine’s Day Fun Pack for them to work on during the week for morning work and free time. They enjoy them so much. They don’t even realize they are learning and reviewing skills (compound words, making words, word search, ABC order, and much more).
Create Beautiful Pieces of Valentine’s Art
Everyone knows I LOVE teaching art and doing art projects in the classroom. I love having my class create fun and exciting projects. Many of these Valentine’s Day Classroom Activities are based on our theme.

Complete a Directed Drawing Activity

Gift Students with a Thoughtful Valentine
Of course, I always give my students a Valentine from me. I try to be creative, and last year, I came across these fun, non-food, printable valentines from Rachelle Smith. I grabbed these awesome heart straws and eraser rings from Target to attach to the Valentine’s. They were a huge hit. The parents loved them too!
Free Valentine’s Day Game
My favorite game to play with my class on Valentine’s Day is called Action Hearts, and it’s a FREEBIE for you to download today! Students can use these as brain breaks or charades to have fun in February. Keep them in your pocket for a last-minute activity in a pinch.

To play, print out the hearts and cut them. Have your class sit in a circle and lay the hearts upside down all over the carpet. Then, take turns turning over the hearts and completing the “actions” on the heart. Your class will have a blast acting like animals, spelling words, and telling their friends why they like them!
