What is a good photoshop course for a beginner?

Jan 7, 2022

I have tried a free beginner course for free with Nucly, and learnt some useful stuff but towards the end i got completely stuck and confused and realised i'm getting into something thats far too advanced and complex for me personally with the level that i'm at. It's obviously for full blown graphic design with a lot of complicated layers which i just cannot grasp at present and did not understand what was going on i just felt like i was copying the instructor.

I've looked at an Udemy course for beginners - would this be a good start?

I highly recommend Matt Kloskowski's courses. The Photoshop course is $150, and worth every penny. He breaks it up into manageable chunks, and you can work at your own pace and go back and find things very easily when you get stuck later on. Here's a link: New Photoshop System | Matt Kloskowski

Completely agree with Sam. All three of these guys are excellent. But, you should have a basic understanding of the interface, and tools. If you have those basics, then you will find the above videos very helpful. Here is one more to add also.

I don't disagree with any of the YouTube suggestions made so far. I've used them all.

There's one 'however' I would highlight: one of the major differences between a purchased tutorial teaching a particular program, and a YouTube poster, is that it is very easy to start at the wrong point/level with YouTube.

A purchased tutorial will almost always be a start-to-finish set of lessons; it assumes no knowledge and will start with the basics and slowly work through to a more advanced level.

The YouTubers (certainly the ones mentioned) have been posting for years, are very professional in their presentations, but their chronological postings will not necessarily follow on in a strictly logical teaching sequence. But, YouTube is free and effectively a limitless resource...

Therefore, I would make a suggestion: using Anthony Morganti as an example, don't just jump into the "Videos" section of his site; rather go to the "Playlists" section, scroll to the bottom and work your way up. In his example, the 8th Playlist is called Photoshop for Photographers, and in there you will see a set of 21 related episodes that will give you a really good grounding in Photoshop. These are followed by many more, though slightly more advanced, video clips.

And I'll repeat: YouTube is free.

There have been some very good recommendation of some of the prolific YouTubers. I am in favor of the courses route. Another site is Terry White on YouTube. I would start with the availability through the public library. Depending on the state you live in some states have interlibrary loans within the state. This may include state universities libraries.

As with any new learning process depending on your level of commitment. You may have to be ready to immerse yourself. PS has a steep learning curve.

Here is a free course from Sean Bagshaw, entitled "10 Steps to Getting Started with Photoshop" (https://www.outdoorexposurephoto.com/10-steps-to-getting-started-with-photoshop/). It consists of 11 video chapters that you download, and in total runs approximately 70 minutes. Sean is an excellent teacher, and an excellent landscape photographer.

That's a difficult question to answer, it so much depend on your level of experience and learning style. For example I for one despise any "monkey see monkey do" style of instruction; in other words sequential steps to accomplish anything. I need to understand the big picture starting with how the application is structured in general, what tools are available and how they interract. That said what works for me may not work for you, hence difficult to recommend one over another. There are tons of advertised courses on Youtube, each claiming to be the ultimate best way to learn Photoshop, so I say inquire about each one, and find out if you can sample a few beginner lesson and get a feel how each one suits your learning needs and style. Keep in mind that graphic editing technique is one thing, knowing how to use the tool is another. Which one of these are you after? For instance knowing how to make a gradient is one thing, knowing when to use a gradient is another. Then there is basic to advanced computer skills in general. If you are a "computer newbie" sort of thing it's one thing, but if you do computer programming for a living but have limited experience with graphic applications it's another, so find out if you can what level of computer experience a given course expects you to have. I would go as far as to suggest to forget photoshop if you are a "computer newbie", it will fry your brain out and will end up in frustrations!
